About 'is milk dairy'|“Is Happines As Easy As Dairy Milk Or Galaxy ”








My               son               was               diagnosed               with               a               milk               allergy               three               years               ago,               when               he               had               just               turned               seven.

We               found               out               while               giving               him               a               blood               test               to               see               if               he               was               allergic               to               both               casein               and               gluten,               two               allergies               that               have               been               thought               to               have               ties               to               autism               -               my               son               has               the               high               functioning               variety.

Our               pediatrician               advised               us               to               test               for               the               allergy               first,               before               undergoing               a               change               to               his               diet.

When               the               test               came               back               positive               for               a               dairy               allergy,               we               had               a               starting               point               and               a               mission:               immediately               eliminate               all               forms               of               diary               from               my               son's               diet.

Since               then,               we've               found               that               many               families               of               children               with               autism,               ADHD               and               those               who               simply               wanted               to               eliminate               dairy               for               personal               reasons               following               a               casein               free               diet.
               Casein               is               the               protein               in               animal               milk,               such               as               cow's               milk               or               goat's               milk.

Casein               is               not               found               in               milk               produced               from               rice,               almonds,               soy               or               coconuts.
               According               to               the               food               allergy               network,               more               than               12               million               Americans               have               food               allergies,               3               million               of               whom               are               children.

A               2007               study               showed               a               milk               allergy               can               persist               longer               than               previously               thought.

Only               19%               of               800               children               outgrew               a               milk               allergy               by               age               four;               79%               outgrew               it               by               age               sixteen.
               FAN               prints               out               a               list               from               its               website               that               includes               products               for               those               with               milk               allergies               to               avoid.

Items               on               this               list               include:               milk               (all               forms),               goat's               milk,               animal               milk,               milk               protein               hydrolysate,               pudding,               butter,               butter               fat,               butter               oil,               butter               ester,               buttermilk,               casein,               casein               hydrolysate,               caseinates,               cheese,               cottage               cheese,               cream,               curds,               custard,               diacetyl,               ghee,               half-and-half,               lactalbumin,               lactalbumin               phosphate,               lactoferrin,               lactose,               lactulose,               recaldent,               rennet               casein,               sour               cream,               tagatose,               whey               (all               forms),               whey               protein               hydrolysate,               yogurt.
               Milk               is               also               sometimes               found               in:               artificial               butter               flavor,               baked               goods,               caramel,               chocolate               (except               for               some               dark               chocolates               that               are               made               soley               of               cocoa               butter),               lactic               acid               starter               culture,               luncheon               meat,               hot               dogs,               sausages,               margarine,               nisin,               nondairy               products,               nougat.
               Milk               allergy               is               not               to               be               confused               with               lactose               intolerance,               which               is               a               separate               condition,               where               the               body               has               difficulty               digesting               lactose               (milk               sugar),               producing               gas               and               stomach               discomfort.

This               is               important               because               many               products               that               are               made               for               those               with               lactose               intolerance               cannot               be               eaten               by               those               with               a               milk               allergy               (such               as               yogurt).
               When               you               first               start               reading               labels               in               your               search               to               stock               a               dairy               free               home,               the               task               can               seem               daunting.

Milk               is               in               many               breads,               buns               and               baked               goods.

So,               while               hamburger               may               be               perfectly               fine,               sometimes               finding               a               bun               to               go               with               it               is               not               so               easy.

Likewise,               sandwich               breads,               cakes,               cookies               and               those               breaded               chicken               nuggets               that               kids               love               so               much               -               many               have               milk               in               them,               hiding               in               the               form               of               whey.
               I               discovered               that               one               simple               way               to               find               a               dairy               free               item               quickly,               is               to               see               if               the               item               is               marked               Parve.

Parve               is               a               kosher               symbol               for               dairy               free.

Jewish               people               who               follow               a               strict               Kosher               diet               must               know               whether               the               food               they               are               eating               has               dairy               in               it               or               not,               as               they               cannot               mix               milk               products               with               meat               products.

Therefore,               this               system               that               has               been               in               place               for               many               years,               helps               quite               a               bit,               especially               when               you               are               just               starting               out               in               your               shopping               quest.
               Because               dairy               allergies               are               so               common,               large               companies               will               bold               out               "This               product               contains               milk,"               at               the               end               of               the               list               of               ingedients               on               the               label.

I               found               that               often,               bread               items               that               have               soy               listed               at               the               end,               will               often               be               dairy               free,               as               soy               milk               is               often               used               in               baked               goods               as               a               replacement               for               cow's               milk.

Still,               it's               always               important               to               read               all               of               a               product's               ingredients               list.
               Be               careful               to               note               the               instructions               after               the               ingredients               list               that               note               whether               or               not               the               manufacturing               plant               that               produced               the               item               also               produces               those               made               with               milk               using               the               same               equipment.

This               is               known               as               cross               contamination.
               Common               and               tasty               replacements               for               cow's               milk               include:               Soy,               tofu,               rice,               almond               (and               other               nuts),               as               well               as               coconut.
               Milk               chocolate               is               out               for               a               child               with               a               dairy               allergy.

However,               the               ingredient               cocoa               is               dairy               free.

Also               available               are               high               quality               dark               chocolates,               but               be               careful,               not               all               dark               chocolate               is               milk               free.

Read               the               label.
               My               son               loves               Mintz's               Tofutti               blintzes               that               we               get               from               Trader               Joe's.

They're               faux               cheese               blintzes,               a               crepe               wrapped               over               sweet,               creamy               tofutti               filing.

Easy               to               microwave,               quick               and               convenient               (they               make               great               snacks               for               lunchtime,               or               even               served               as               a               light               lunch               in               a               pinch).
               He               prefers               Blue               Diamond               Almond               Breeze               almond               milk,               to               the               soy               and               rice               milk               alternatives               (there               are               several               fine               brands               of               almond               milk,               Pacific               being               another               one               we've               tried.

Rice               Dreams               also               makes               a               nice               rice               milk,               with               soy               and               almond               variations).

In               cereal,               he               likes               plain               almond               milk,               while               I               enjoy               a               low               calorie,               dairy               free               shake               made               out               of               vanilla               almond               milk               and               ice               (also               high               in               protein).

Chocolate               almond               milk               is               a               favorite               of               everyone               in               our               household.
               Almond               milk,               like               rice               and               soy               milk,               is               often               found               in               the               specialty               food               section               of               most               grocery               stores               (although               fresh               soy               is               often               found               in               the               refrigerated               section,               next               to               cow's               milk).

Soy               milk               is               more               common               though               and               chocolate               soy               milk               can               often               be               found               in               portable               portions               that               fit               in               well               with               packing               a               school               lunch.

Be               careful,               I've               seen               many               stores               stock               portable
               In               April,               Passover               brings               many               special               parve               goodies,               like               macaroons               (coconut               cookies),               jelly               filled               cookies,               cakes               and               more.

I               often               stock               up               on               cake               mixes               around               this               time               and               other               hard               to               find               milk               free               mixes               that               seem               in               larger               supply.

Or,               I               wait               until               all               these               things               go               on               sale,               right               after               the               Jewish               holiday.
               Thomas's               makes               some               nice               milk               free               bagels               and               english               muffins               that               are               especially               yummy               with               Tofutti               spread,               a               cream               cheese               alternative               that               my               son               swears               tastes               just               like               the               real               thing.

Again,               a               bagel               and               tofutti               makes               a               nice               quick               packed               lunch,               when               paired               with               a               piece               of               fruit               and               a               juice               or               soy               milk               box.

Some               forms               of               chicken               nuggets               (like               Dino-buddies,               what               we,               in               our               family               like               to               call               "Dinosaur               chicken")               and               fish               sticks               (Trader               Joe's               makes               a               very               good               dairy               free               variety)               work               too.
               Pasta               with               marinara               sauce,               or               with               olive               oil               and               dairy               free               butter               is               another               nice               dairy               free               alternative               to               meat.

For               dairy               free               butter,               we               like               Smart               Balance,               but               there               are               many               find               alternatives               in               your               local               market.
               Dining               out               can               be               tricky,               but               not               impossible.

It               just               takes               some               getting               used               to               and               being               very,               very               clear               with               your               server               that               your               child               has               a               milk               allergy               and               cannot               eat               anything               with               dairy               in               it,               which               means,               food               cannot               be               cooked               in               butter               or               breaded               with               products               that               include               dairy               products               (like               cheese).
               For               breakfast,               my               son               usually               sticks               to               eggs               or               egg               sandwiches               and               hash               browns.

Pancakes               are               off               the               menu               when               eating               out,               as               they               all               seem               to               use               milk               in               them;               however,               we               make               great               pancakes               at               home               using               plain               almond               milk               and               either               ingredients               from               scratch,               or               Bisquick,               which               is               dairy               free.
               Lunch               and               dinner               out               include               pasta               with               marinara,               hamburgers,               chicken,               steak,               veggies,               salad               (watch               the               dressing,               they               often               have               milk               or               cheese               in               them).
               Cheese-less               pizza               can               be               made               at               any               pizza               parlor,               so               your               child               doesn't               have               to               feel               left               out               during               school               pizza               parties               or               birthdays.

Plus,               you               can               make               a               great               cheese-less               pizza               yourself               for               under               $3               by               getting               pizza               dough               from               Trader               Joe's               and               their               pizza               sauce.

We               eat               this               at               least               once               a               week               and               even               my               daughter,               who               doesn't               have               a               milk               allergy,               often               prefers               her               pizza               cheese-less.
               While               having               dessert               in               a               restaurant               can               be               challenging,               at               home,               we               always               keep               an               ample               stock               of               dairy               free               ice               cream               treats...

the               variety               of               which               are               endless.

Trader               Joe's               has               a               nice               soy               vanilla               and               soy               chocolate               ice               cream,               Rice               Dreams               has               a               good               selectrion,               while               my               son's               favorite               is               Chocolate               Obsession               by               Purely               Decadent,               a               non-dairy               ice               cream               with               chunks               of               chocolate               and               fudge               and               a               rich,               cream               texture.

For               a               change               of               pace,               there's               also               Tofutti               Cuties               -               tofutti               ice               cream               sandwiches,               tofutti               creamsicles.

Dole's               lemonade               ice               pops               or               cherry               and               lemon               Italian               ices               in               a               cup               are               also               sweet               and               refreshing.
               At               birthdays,               I               bake               my               son's               cake               or               cupcakes               for               school.

My               son's               favorite               is               my               homemade               apple               cake,               which               is               made               with               canola               oil               instead               of               butter,               fresh               apples,               flour,               baking               soda,               baking               powder,               sugar               and               cinnamon.

The               kids               at               school               look               forward               to               my               son's               birthday               every               year               so               they               can               have               one               of               his               apple               cupcakes.

There               are               also               plenty               of               dairy               free               cake               recipes               out               there,               and               even               dairy               free               cake               mixes               at               places               like               Trader               Joe's               and               Whole               Foods.

Many               brownie               mixes               in               supermarkets               are               also               dairy               free,               just               read               the               box               and               you'd               be               surprised               to               see               how               many               options               are               out               there               for               sweets               and               treats.
               My               son               has               fully               embraced               a               dairy               free               lifestyle               and               it               won't               be               long               before               your               child               does               too.

It's               good               to               instruct               your               child               in               making               smart               decisions               and               letting               he               or               she               know               what               foods               to               eat.

Emphasize               that               the               dairy               free               alternatives               are               delicious               and               how               many               other               kids               are               eating               the               very               same               things               and               are               happier               and               healthier               for               it.

You'll               see,               it's               a               lot               of               work               reading               labels               and               educating               yourself               and               your               child               at               first,               but               it               gets               easy               quickly.
